DJ Maphorisa had previously suggested that he and Kabza De Small were planning to make this year’s Scorpion Kings Live bigger and better, and the duo appeared to fulfil that promise with an impressive live production.

On Saturday, September 19, more than 74,000 music lovers gathered at Johannesburg’s FNB Stadium for the sold-out Scorpion Kings Live concert. The event transformed the iconic venue into a huge celebration of South African music, culture and the global influence of the country’s sound.

The concert showcased music that has its roots in South Africa’s townships but has since gained recognition on international stages. FNB Stadium has hosted several major global acts and events, including Global Citizen, Chris Brown and Travis Scott, and the Scorpion Kings production was staged on a similarly impressive scale.

Smooth Transport and Stadium Access

The Scorpion Kings and their organising team appeared to have taken lessons from last year’s event at Loftus Stadium, with efforts made to avoid some of the problems experienced previously.

Concertgoers had several transport options available, including the Gautrain, Park and Ride services and e-hailing platforms. People arriving through e-hailing services were directed towards the Nasrec Cemetery entrance and then had to walk for approximately 10 to 15 minutes before reaching the stadium gates.

At the stadium, VIP and hospitality entrances were generally efficient, with security personnel and ticketing staff assisting patrons. The general admission entrance required more control at certain points, as some attendees attempted to push their way through the gates.

There were, however, some difficulties around the Gold Rush Dome entrance and exit. The tunnel connecting the area to the dome created some challenges, with security officers restricting access for Gold Rush ticket holders and media personnel without accreditation tags unless they were accompanied by authorised staff.

Hospitality at the Gold Rush Dome

The Gold Rush Dome provided a hospitality area for media representatives, artists and patrons who had purchased Gold Rush hospitality tickets.

Food was one of the notable features of the hospitality experience, with guests having access to a wide selection of meals and refreshments. The area was also maintained in a clean condition throughout the event.

Complimentary food and drinks were available during the concert, adding to the overall experience for hospitality guests.

The general bars were busy for much of the evening but remained reasonably organised. Staff worked to manage queues and maintain enough room for patrons to move around.

Although some drinks were spilled near the general bar areas, the bars were conveniently positioned throughout the stadium blocks and appeared to have sufficient supplies to meet demand.

A Dramatic Arrival for the Scorpion Kings

The Scorpion Kings made an unforgettable entrance when DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small arrived by parachute onto the FNB Stadium grounds. Their dramatic arrival immediately captured the attention of the thousands of fans who had gathered for the concert.

The spectacular entrance provided an indication of the scale of the show that was about to unfold.

Scorpion Kings Live allowed fans to experience some of the duo’s most popular music in a live setting. The performances also featured songs that have become part of the personal memories and experiences of many listeners.

With more than 70 artists and performers appearing throughout the event, audiences were treated to a wide variety of performances and collaborations, making the concert a major showcase of South African musical talent and culture.
