Crime activists are demanding urgent action to stop the continued violence in Kraaifontein following the fatal shooting of a Morningstar Rugby Club player in a double murder on Monday.
The two killings took place in C-Block at Gabrielle Court in Scottsdene, where two men were shot dead in separate incidents within a short distance of each other.
The first victim, a 27-year-old man, suffered several gunshot wounds to his head, left arm and lower back. Approximately 30 minutes later, a 20-year-old man was also shot in the same block, sustaining multiple gunshot wounds to the head.
Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.
Western Cape police spokesperson Captain F.C. Van Wyk confirmed that investigations into the shootings are under way and that no arrests have been made. Police are also working to establish the motive behind the attacks.
Van Wyk said Kraaifontein police opened a murder investigation following the death of the 27-year-old man on Monday, 21 September 2026, at around 12:05 in C-Block, Gabrielle Court.
According to police, officers arrived at the scene and found the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was declared dead at the scene by medical personnel.
Van Wyk said the circumstances surrounding both shootings remain under investigation, with determining the motive forming part of the police inquiry. No suspects had been identified or arrested at the time of the statement.
The death of Eltino Fortuin, known as “Malkak”, has also prompted an outpouring of grief. Fortuin was a member of Morningstar Rugby Club and was among those killed in the shootings.
Morningstar Rugby Club paid tribute to Fortuin on social media, describing him as a valued member of the club who was deeply connected to the team and its rugby community.
The club said Fortuin, who was from Kraaifontein, was more than just a player and had become part of the Morningstar family. It extended condolences to his relatives, friends, teammates and everyone who knew him, while remembering his passion for the club, his teammates and rugby.
Gavin Riddles, acting chairperson of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) and national chairperson of the Community Law & Order Foundation, condemned the continued violence in Kraaifontein.
Riddles called for stronger action to address the ongoing killings, saying the community had reached a point where enough was enough and that another murder — particularly a double murder — was unacceptable.
